RB-003 Leather Balm

Formula RB-003

Status: 🟢 Field Tested (Version 1.0)

Overview

RB-003 Leather Balm was developed in The Raw Barrel workshop to create a natural leather conditioner using pine rosin, beeswax, neatsfoot oil, and jojoba oil. The goal was to produce a balm that nourishes leather, improves water resistance, and is easy to apply by hand without requiring heat.

This formula represents one step in our ongoing workshop experiments. As additional testing is completed, this article will be updated with new observations and revisions.

Purpose

RB-003 was designed to:

  • Restore dry leather
  • Improve water resistance
  • Maintain a natural appearance
  • Apply easily by hand
  • Use simple, natural ingredients

Formula (50 g Test Batch)

Ingredient Weight
Beeswax 25 g
Pine Rosin 12.5 g
Neatsfoot Oil 10 g
Jojoba Oil 2.5 g

Equipment

  • Digital Scale
  • Double Boiler
  • Mixing Cup
  • Stirring Stick
  • Storage Tin or Jar

Mixing Procedure

  1. Melt the beeswax using gentle heat.
  2. Add the pine rosin and stir until completely dissolved.
  3. Add the neatsfoot oil.
  4. Add the jojoba oil.
  5. Stir thoroughly until fully blended.
  6. Pour into a storage container and allow to cool completely.

First Impressions

After cooling, the balm had several characteristics that stood out:

  • Softer than a stick of chapstick
  • Slightly tacky
  • Easy to spread
  • No heat gun required
  • Mild natural scent
  • Conditions leather without feeling overly greasy

Field Test

The first test was performed on a well-used leather work boot.

Only one boot was treated so it could be directly compared with the untreated boot.

This allows future testing of:

  • Water resistance
  • Color change
  • Leather flexibility
  • Long-term durability

Current Results

Initial observations:

  • Easy hand application
  • Leather absorbed the conditioner well
  • Natural appearance
  • Slight darkening of the leather
  • Comfortable working consistency

Water resistance testing is currently in progress.
